Find a licensed plumber in Bergen County

In an emergency, do this first

1. Search near your town

The search box above opens Google Maps with plumbers near the town you pick. Compare how near they are, how many recent reviews they have, and whether those reviews mention work like yours. Pick two or three, and for anything that can wait a day, get more than one estimate.

2. Verify the license online

Plumbing in New Jersey must be carried out by, or under, a licensed master plumber. You can check a license yourself, free of charge:

  1. Open the state's license verification page.
  2. Under profession, choose Master Plumbers.
  3. Search by the person's name or by the license number.
  4. Check that the status is Active, and that the name matches the business you are dealing with.

3. Questions worth asking

  1. What is your master plumber license number? It should be on the estimate, and normally on the truck and in their advertising.
  2. Do you carry liability insurance? Ask for a certificate.
  3. Does this need a permit? In New Jersey, replacing a water heater, gas piping and new plumbing generally do. The plumber applies to your town's building department, and the work is inspected.
  4. Is the price fixed? If it is an estimate, ask what could change it, and to be called first.
  5. Is there a call-out or diagnostic fee, and does it come off the bill?
  6. What is guaranteed, and for how long?

Reasons to look elsewhere

  • They cannot or will not give a license number
  • The name on the license does not match the business, and nobody can explain why
  • "No permit needed" for a water heater or gas work
  • A large deposit in cash
  • No written estimate, or pressure to agree immediately

Who licenses plumbers in New Jersey?

The State Board of Examiners of Master Plumbers, which is part of the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs. One state license covers every town in Bergen County.

Does this site recommend or rank plumbers?

No. We list nobody and nobody pays to appear here. The search opens Google Maps, and you make the choice.

The person who came to my house is not the license holder. Is that a problem?

Not necessarily. Plumbers and apprentices may work under a licensed master plumber, who is responsible for the job. The business should still give you the master plumber's name and license number.
